Mattapoisett Selectmen approve licenses for two new businesses

MATTAPOISETT — A food truck will return to Mahoney’s and a new travelling market will make its way around town after Selectmen approved two licenses at an April 16 meeting.

Shaun Murphy appeared before the board, virtually at least, for a common victualler’s license, as he plans to reopen the food trailer at Mahoney’s, which was there until about two years ago.

“A lot of people have been missing it, myself included,” Murphy said. He said that he would make some slight changes to the truck, including removing the deep fryer, to prevent employees from getting burned and cut the amount of cleanup.

Selectman Jordan Collyer said the proposed truck looked like it had a good afternoon and lunch menu.

“As long as you provide good food at a good price, people show up,” his fellow Selectman Paul Silva said.

The second entrepreneur to appear before the board was Cecile Callahan, who will run a seasonal popup  business for flowers, linens, repurposed items and more out of a truck with her sister, Dorris McCarthy. The two have appeared in the past at the Farmer’s Market at Old Rochester Regional High School, and are now seeking a Hawkers and Peddlers license.

Her plan was to collaborate with local businesses to draw attention to the shops and her truck, called CeCe and D. The truck is small enough that it can fit in a parking spot, or anywhere else that an owner would like it parked.

Silva wanted to be sure that the truck would not show up on town-owned property, like Town Beach or the Town Wharf. Callahan said it would just be near other businesses.

“We’re not going to drive around like an ice cream truck or food truck,” Callahan eventually said to answer some of Silva’s questions on the truck.

That clarified things for the selectman, who had been picturing that the business would run like that, and he subsequently approved it.
