Mattapoisett Selectmen discuss hiring new town employees

Oct 24, 2012

New hires were a topic of conversation for Mattapoisett Selectmen on Tuesday night.

As Building Inspector Andrew Bobola looks to hire a new administrator, the Board discussed a way to make information more fluid between Bobola’s department, the Planning Board and Conservation Commission.

Clerks for each of the offices are part-time, and therefore, people may be forced to make multiple visits to the Town Hall if one of the offices is closed.

“We’re looking into cross-training. So if someone comes in, they can answer some rudimentary questions,” said Town Administrator Mike Gagne. “We want to try to minimize the number of trips people would have to take.”

“We need to come up with a plan as to how we can have everybody work together,” said Selectman Chair Jordan Collyer. “If we have to offer more time to the part-timers, we can swing some of that.”

The Board also discussed adding an employee to the Highway Department.

“It’s extremely difficult to cover all the bases with the amount of people that we have,” said Highway Surveyor Barry Denham. “It ties up a lot of man hours just to do the housecleaning work properly.”

By doing a lot of road work themselves instead of by contract, Denham and his team have saved the town money, noted Collyer.

“Nobody likes to talk about adding new people,” said Collyer, “We’ve saved the money to fund a full position.”

Collyer and Denham added that the Highway Department has been functioning with less staff than 10 years ago when it had seven employees.

“There are four people on the road plus me,” said Denham. “Technically we’re down two people.”

The Selectmen commended both Dehnam and Bobola for their work and said the conversation would continue.
