Mattapoisett Selectmen, highway surveyor discuss road improvement
From 2006 to 2015, Highway Surveyor Barry Denham’s road plan covered 15.9 miles at an approximate cost of $4.9 million, using a combination of town and state funds.
On Tuesday, he discussed the ongoing road plan with Selectmen.
Denham said he hopes to complete Barstow Street, Cannon Street, and the lower end of Pearl Street this year.
The town is also moving ahead with work needed to complete the overhaul of roads and sidewalks in the Village, which will hopefully be funded through the state’s Transportation Improvement Plan.
Town Administrator Mike Gagne said the goal is to get bids and information together to proceed with the required 25 percent design, which will help the town stay on and perhaps move ahead on the list of projects. Assuming all goes well, funds for the multimillion-dollar project would be available by 2021. Denham and Selectmen, however, are hoping that the money will become available sooner.
While the Village work is a major overhaul, Denham said he is keeping an eye on other roads that need to be maintained as well. He is considering putting sealant on some roads and a technique called microsurfacing on others to extend their life.
“You manage the big projects and you keep your eyes on the little ones, too,” said Town Administrator Mike Gagne.
Field Engineering project engineer John Connell said having a mix is wise.
“The reconstruction is the big money,” he said. “Take care of what you have. [With] crack sealant and roadway maintenance you can really stretch your money, pushing off the inevitable.”
Selectmen praised Denham’s work as well as those in his department.
“I have every confidence in Barry,” said Selectman Paul Silva.
In other news, Gagne said the town is waiting for final permitting from the state to add three lighted crosswalks to Route 6. The town received funds almost a year ago to do the work, he said.
Assuming all goes well, the crosswalks will be placed near the housing authority sidewalk across to Pearl Street, by The Ropewalk and at the high school.
