Mattapoisett snow budget totals $113,000
The town’s $69,000 snow and ice removal fund is now about $44,000 over budget, according to Highway Surveyor Barry Denham.
“The last blizzard kicked us over,” Denham told Selectmen on Tuesday night. “This is the worst it’s been since I’ve been here. We’ve never had this much snow in such a short period of time with no melt down at all.”
Denham is hoping that a fresh shipment of salt and sand worth $7,000 will not be completely used up for the remainder of the winter.
Selectmen commended Denham and his crew for their work, and said the streets are much clearer than those of other towns.
As for the budget, Selectmen are hoping the town will be reimbursed from the state for some of the costs from the two blizzards.
Until then, Selectmen authorized deficit spending. State law permits towns to deficit spend their snow and ice funds.
