Mattapoisett teens commended for help during snowstorm

When Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons was in a pinch for extra help during the snowstorm, twins Ben and Will Coucci came to the aid of the town.

Village Court, a senior housing complex, had asked Lyons for 24-hour coverage while electricity was out. Lyons said she received help from retired officers and other volunteers in town, but still had one shift over the weekend that she was unable to fill.

“The 12 p.m. to 8 a.m. watch was my problem,” said Lyons. The Chief called in Ben, who interns with her several days a week at the Police Station.

“We paged Ben to see if he was available. He brought his twin brother Will.”

After working the “fire watch,” the high school students also volunteered to help at Old Rochester Regional High School, which was set up as a shelter.

“They came in at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday and stayed until 11:30 a.m. on Monday,” said Lyons. “They stepped up in a time of need. I feel we need to demonstrate our appreciation for that.”

Lyons presented certificates of appreciation to the brothers at Tuesday’s Selectmen meeting.

“They were a really big help,” said the Chief.
