Mattapoisett Woman's Club biannual garden tour goes 'Down by the Bay'
The Mattapoisett Woman's Club's Down by the Bay garden tour had plants from A to Z.
Nine spots were on this year's tour, including a number of seaside gardens.
Ruth and Michael Joliffe's Bluefish Garden featured geometric gardens that compliment the strong lines in the couple's home. The vegetable garden was a series of rectangular beds bordered by lettuce.
"We have 180 heads of lettuce and there are two of us, so we have a little extra," said Ruth Joliffe.
She also recently put in an alphabetical garden with plants arranged from allium to zenobia.
Several homeowners were on site to answer questions, including Suzanne Sylvester who started with a small kitchen garden in 1980 at her home on John Street.
"This was my hobby in the backyard," said Sylvester.
Eventually, she expanded the garden to wrap around her house with roses, hostas, dogwoods, hydrangeas and blueberries among other flowers and trees.
As her interest grew, Sylvester, a member of the Woman's Club, said she has found a whole community of like-minded people.
"You meet a lot of nice friends gardening," she said.
