MDOT responds to $3.7 million road project

Mattapoisett recently received good news regarding a $3.7 million road project proposed for the Village.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Project Review Committee evaluated the town’s plan, which includes significant renovations to Acushnet Road, Main Street, Water Street, Beacon Street, and Marion Road, and approved its eligibility for federal aid highway funding.

The letter, sent July 29, states that the “eligibility determination” does not ensure the town will receive funding from the state or federal government. But it is another step in the right direction.

“I’m very pleased that we did get the project review committee approval,” said Town Administrator Mike Gagne.

In June, residents had the opportunity to weigh in on what repairs and upgrades they felt the streets needed. Going forward, Gagne said he wants to continue to get public input.

“One of the beneficial things that we’ll do is some scoping sessions where we can do more of a workshop meeting, adding the different areas that people have certain views and opinions and ideas about,” he said.

Residents he’s already spoken with have responded favorably to the idea, Gagne said.

He added that the repairs, which will not begin before 2016, will enhance the beautiful scenery.

“This corridor…in my estimation is probably one of the most scenic coasts vista locations that you have,” said Gagne.
