Meet Catherine Heuberger

MATTAPOISETT— Three candidates are running to fill one spot on the Mattapoisett Select Board in the town election on Tuesday, May 16.

Having worked in Town Hall for 18 years, Town Clerk Catherine Heuberger has decided to throw her hat in the ring for another community facing role.

“I’m looking for another new challenge,” she said.

Heuberger grew up in Mattapoisett and spent the majority of her life here. She said she enjoys working for the public.

“I really always loved this town,” she said. “As an elected official I serve everyone.”

Prior to being elected as Town Clerk in 2014 Heuberger worked as a clerk in the treasure/tax collector office since 2005 but has since received a “Local Government Leadership and Management” certification from Suffolk University.

“It's nice to be able to work from other communities, you share a lot of ideas and you learn a lot sitting at the table with your co-workers or with your counterparts in another town,” she said.

As Town Clerk, Heuberger introduced online bill payment methods to the Clerk’s office.

“I think that the town in general has really moved up with the times which is super important,” Heuberger said.

As a daughter of an aging parent and a mother of four, Heuberger said that one of the greatest issues Mattapoisett is facing is its ability to support housing for the town’s large senior population while also appealing to the declining number of young families.

“It’s beautiful but expensive to live here,” said Heuberger. “I'm not going to say I will try to lower your taxes, but I can tell you that I will try to do the best to make the right decisions for the town that will use your money wisely.”

During her time as Clerk, Heuberger said that she has learned to manage residents equally.

“I've practiced my skills of treating everybody the same and I think sometimes we forget as elected officials that you really are agreeing to work for everybody.” she said. “That's the unique thing about being an elected Town Clerk.”

Heuberger said that her home town is close to her heart.

“I’ve never seen a place that has impressed me as much [as Mattapoisett], I love it,” she said.

Heuberger is facing Brian Connelly and incumbent Tyler Macallister for a seat on the Mattapoisett Select Board in the town election on Tuesday, May 16.
