Multiple bear sightings in Mattapoisett

Aug 2, 2011

The Mattapoisett Police responded to three black bear sightings Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. According to police, a bear was seen at 70 Marion Road Monday morning and two sightings were reported off of Aucoot Road Tuesday morning. A reverse 911 call issued throughout the town alerted residents of bears in the area.

"I was out watering my garden and could hear my neighbor screaming," said John Mathieu of Bowman Road. "She was screaming 'bear'. I turned around and it was like 30 feet from me. It was 125 to 150 pounds, easy."

Mathieu saw the bear near his chicken coop, quickly grabbed his camera and scared the bear off after snapping a photo.

"I figured I'd see him near the bottom of the hill but he was right there," said Mathieu, whose property abuts an area owned by the land trust. "I let my sons see it and then I scared it away. I threw some rocks at it."

According to the Mattapoisett Police Department the reverse 911 call was used as a precaution.
