New ‘carbon-friendly’ waste removal facility proposed in Rochester
A new, expanded waste disposal facility could be in the works for Rochester.
On Monday, representatives from the New Bedford-based ABC Disposal Service Inc., proposed replacing its facility located on Cranberry Highway, near the Rochester Environmental Park on Route 28.
If approved, the 30,000 square-foot facility would be rebuilt to 89,000 square feet.
New machinery would also be purchased that would be able to separate waste from recyclables on site.
“This would be a state-of-the-art waste handling facility,” said Michael Camara, Vice President of the waste disposal company. “It’s unique in that it can recycle 95 percent of the material.”
Camara added that the new facility would include 36,000 square-feet of solar panels, which would cut down on the costs of electricity at the facility.
“We feel this is going to be a carbon-friendly option,” Camara said.
“We will also have 35 job openings to start, with first preference to Rochester residents.”
ABC Disposal Service Inc. first purchased the property in early 2012.
Selectman Naida Parker said the company is aiming to create a “more modern facility.”
“It seems the current building has outlived its usefulness,” Parker said.
The project is at an early stage, Camara said.
To begin construction, the waste disposal company would have to secure approval from the Board of Health to install a new septic system as well as go through the site plan review process with the town’s Planning Board.
Camara said he hopes to meet with the Planning Board in January.
Of the project, Parker said, “It sounds like it has a lot of potential.”
