New administrators introduced at Marion School Committee
Marion School Committee members welcomed two new district administrators at the board’s first meeting of the school year on Wednesday night.
Superintendent Doug White introduced Michael Nelson of Plymouth and Patrick Spencer of Billerica who were both hired recently to serve as the director of student services and businesses administrator, respectively.
Before Spencer was hired the district had been without a business administrator for nine months following the resignation of Catherine Antonellis in October 2013.
“I’m excited to be here and start a new chapter in my career,” said Spencer.
He was the business administrator for the Salem Academy Charter School. He spent three years as an assistant business administrator in Wellesley Public Schools and worked as a district accountant in the Minuteman Regional School District in Lexington for 25 years.
In his first few weeks, Spencer said he’s been meeting with school and town officials to familiarize himself with district finances.
“So far it’s been a very positive experience,” Spencer said, adding that he's looking to purchase a home in the area. He holds a master of business administration from Framingham State University, and a bachelor’s of science in accounting from Bentley College.
Nelson arrived in ORR after serving as the out-of-district coordinator/district-wide special education coordinator for Walpole public schools.
He’s worked in Walpole since 2011. Before that he worked at The Home for Little Wanderers in Boston from 2006 to 2011 as the lead teacher, assistant principal and principal.
Nelson has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Bates College and a master’s degree in special education from Walden University. Currently, he is working to complete a master’s of science degree at Bridgewater State University. He replaces Teresa Hamm who retired.
“Starting in mid-July I’ve been learning about the different student services offered in the tri-town and I was pleased to join [Principal Lyn Rivet] in welcoming the students and families on the first day of school,” Nelson said.
