New furniture consignment shop opens in Mattapoisett

After learning about the used furniture business from Fairhaven’s What A Find!, Mike Delk is making a go at it with his own shop in Mattapoisett.

The Rochester resident recently opened Marion Road Furniture Consignment at 44 Marion Rd (Route 6) near Oxford Creamery where he sells gently used furniture for every room in the house.

“[What A Find!] seems to have a really winning model,” said Delk. “They go for the higher quality stuff and sell it at a reasonable price.”

A native of Georgia and Desert Storm veteran, Delk formerly worked at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

After marrying his wife Sherry, he decided to stay in the area, preferring Rochester’s grassroots feel to his increasingly urban hometown outside of Atlanta.

“I find the north where I’m at to be more country than where I was from,” Delk said.

While raising their three kids, Delk helped his wife with her cleaning business, Clean As A Whistle, and also worked as a handyman. That work lead him to clean out a number of homes, and he was introduced to What A Find! Eventually, Delk began buying and selling used furniture himself.

When it came time to open his own store, Delk said the owners of What A Find! were supportive.

“They were not offended by me opening up my own, smaller version, which was very nice of them,” he said.

Delk chose the shop on Route 6 due to the volume of traffic that passes each day. He also hopes that property owners will come in and find pieces to outfit their summer cottage rentals.

The furniture Delk purchases comes from smoke-free homes and is good quality, he said.

“I don’t want the ‘I guess it’s OK’ stuff,” he said.

For those interested in selling pieces, Delk will pick it up for a fee, but he wants to see pictures first and said pieces should be free of pet hair. A few dings and scratches may be acceptable, as Delk said he likes refinishing wood.

Making deliveries and pickups, Delk is definitely no stranger to hard work. Being self-employed is a challenge, but he prefers it to the 9 to 5 alternative.

“It’s a lot of work, but I get to work for myself. I make my own hours.”

Marion Road Furniture Consignment is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
