New Old Hammondtown principal ‘eager’ to connect with community

MATTAPOISETT — A new principal of Old Hammondtown School has been named.

Stephanie Wells will enter the role leading the Mattapoisett school July 1, according to a June 13 announcement by the Old Rochester Regional School District.

It is the third such announcement this spring of a new permanent principal at an Old Rochester district school. In May, Lynn Dessert was named principal of Sippican Elementary School and Heidi Letendre was elevated from interim to permanent principal of Rochester Memorial School.

Wells will replace Kevin Tavares, who is retiring. A Plymouth native, she has been an assistant principal for Rockland Public Schools since 2022. She has also previously been an assistant principal for Taunton Public Schools.

"I am eager to meet and connect with staff, students and families in the coming months,” Wells said. “Together, we will begin the process of getting to know one another and exploring how I can best support this incredible community that has such a strong commitment to student success."

Wells has a bachelor's degree from New York University, a Master of Education in elementary education from Bridgewater State College, and a certificate of advanced graduate study from the University of New England.
