New regulations planned for Mattapoisett roads

Sep 10, 2019

MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Board of Selectmen agreed to write two separate letters to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation after hearing the input of Highway Surveyor Barry Denham at a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The first letter will express approval of a proposed Heavy Motor Vehicle Exclusion regulation for vehicles exceeding a 2.5 ton carrying capacity for the Arch Bridge on River Road.

State Traffic Engineer Neil Boudreau wrote a letter to Mattapoisett Town Administrator Michael Gagne, dated Aug. 26. In the letter Bourdreau wrote that the Department of Transportation’s District 5 Traffic Engineering Section and Boston Office Regulations Section agreed to the new regulation due to “geometric restrictions and safety concerns” about the bridge.

Barry Denham will be tasked with placing appropriate signage on both sides of the bridge to give drivers fair notice of the regulation.

The second letter will express intent to create a town wide speed limit of 25 mph for all unmarked areas. Signs indicating the speed limit will be placed at all six public entrances to the town.

The new bridge regulation and town wide speed limit will not be effective until the letters are sent, and proper signage has been placed.
