New report card system delayed to 2017

A standards-based report card system for tri-town elementary schools will not be implemented until next fall, Asst. Superintendent Elise Frangos announced at the Mattapoisett School Committee meeting on Monday.

Originally, the new report cards were going to be rolled out this school year, but teachers took a vote and overwhelmingly decided to wait.

Once implemented, elementary schools kids will no longer receive the traditional As, Bs, and Cs. Instead, they will be evaluated on their progress in various skills using four categories: mastery, proficiency, emerging and not yet.

The delay in using standards-based reporting will give the school more time to educate parents and perfect the technology aspect of the system.

“We need to look at completing that technology component because we want it to be seamless when it goes out to parents,” said Principal Rose Bowman.

Frangos, who worked with teachers to craft the report card system, said she is confident it will be beneficial to both students and parents.

“I think for kids it has the potential to be enormously rewarding. Instead of working for a grade it’s working to learn,” said Frangos.
