New salon has grand opening
Not everyone gets to go to work and share a building with their sibling. It's even more unusual when one sister owns a construction company and the other is a hair stylist.
But sisters Kim Miranda and Nadine Bernier have found a way to make it happen at Blue Hair Salon & Spa, a new salon in Marion on the corner of Route 6 and Point Road.
The salon shares a space with Sandstone Construction, which is owned by Miranda.
Miranda and her husband Jim founded the construction company in 2008. As the company outgrew its space in Dartmouth, the couple knew they needed to start looking for another place.
That’s when Miranda had a conversation with her sister, Nadine Bernier, who is a hair stylist.
“Jim needed space and I thought a salon would be perfect,” Bernier said.
The sisters found a property that they thought would work – an old auto body shop.
“The front is the salon, and the back is a garage which provides us with storage,” Miranda said. “It’s the best of both worlds.”
After purchasing the property, it was a matter of renovating it to fit the salon’s needs.
“It took about six months,” Miranda said. “My husband did most of the work himself.”
Now, Miranda uses a room in the salon as her office space for the construction company, while her sister is out on the floor working with her clients at a stylist booth.
The salon has a waiting area, booths for hair stylists, a manicure and pedicure area and private rooms along the back wall for services such as waxing and skincare.
Each stylist and aesthetician rents out the booth or room that they use for their services – essentially using the salon as a creative space for their own business.
Along with their skills, the practitioners also brings their own clientele.
Bernier worked at a salon in Fairhaven but had many clients from Marion, so she knew her business wouldn’t suffer from the move. The other stylists, she said, have had the same luck, too.
“Everyone is established,” she said. “A couple salons closed, so coming here was perfect.”
The open house was a success as well, and Miranda said there was a good turnout. The salon offered discounts to anyone who made appointments, and held raffles for baskets of beauty products.
“We wanted people to check out the space and to tell people we’re in business,” Miranda said.
