Old Colony Athletic Director receives ‘Distinguished Service Award’
MATTAPOISETT — “It’s the highest honor the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association provides the athletic directors,” said Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School Athletic Director Matt Trahan, the recipient of the 2025 MIAA Distinguished Service Award.
The Distinguished Service Award honors Massachusetts athletic directors each year who provide “unique and invaluable service” to students attending MIAA member schools, according to the organization’s website.
Trahan coached the Old Colony Boys Varsity Basketball team from 1998 to 2025, winning five championships across 27 seasons of decisive leadership and four coach of the year awards. At just 24 years old, he assumed the role of Old Colony Athletic Director in 2004.
“I see the value of what this school brings to the youth,” said Trahan.
Trahan received a call from MIAA representatives “a couple weeks ago” and was “blown away.”
“You don’t do what we do to be recognized like that, but it is nice to hear those things from colleagues — it kind of took my breath away,” he said.
For Trahan, the most rewarding part of the job is “just seeing the kids happy.”
“As much as I physically can, I try to give back to the school … It’s really like the highlight of my life to be here and in this position and be able to affect change,” he said.
Trahan thanked his wife for her support throughout his career and reflected on the happiness he feels now that his sons are students at Old Colony and get to participate in their sports programs.
“I love my job and I love the people that I do it for,” he said.
