Old Colony boys basketball dominate the court

The boys varsity basketball players at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School don’t let success go to their heads.

They know how to win on court, and they do win. To date, the team’s regular season record stands strong at 4-2, but that’s not without a lot of dedication.

Coach Matt Trahan said the team’s success relies on the players’ focus as well as their ability to connect with one another on the court.

“The nice thing about this group is that they don’t care who scores. They’re in it to win it,” Trahan said.

The team’s latest win came on Wednesday against Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School. The Cougars won 60-51.

“We’re playing to our strengths,” Trahan said. “We’re quick. On every play we’re looking to jam people up.”

This is Trahan’s first year as head coach of the varsity team. Last year, he led the junior varsity team to a regular season record of 14-6.

“They play it one game at a time,” said assistant coach Ben Trahan. “Sometimes the players look too far ahead, but they play it one game at a time.”

To keep up the success, Matt said the boys are working hard to continually improve.

“We need to bring turnovers down,” Matt said. “We’re good at finding the open guy, but we need to work on our inside and outside game.”

The team also has several players leading the way for their younger teammates. Junior Jake Pringle is averaging 14 points a game as well as nine rebounds, Trahan said. Junior Jared Mello averages 13 points a game and three steals. Senior John Pena is also a reliable player for blocks during a game, Matt said.

“They’re just working their butts off,” Matt said. “They all play. We don’t have six kids sitting on a bench. They all contribute.”

Supporting their teammates also extends to the girls varsity team, Matt said.

For most of the season, the boys and girls play against the same teams. But, for the one game the girls play and the boys don’t, the Trahans said the boys will travel with their fellow Cougars.

“The boys will go to show support,” Matt said.

As for the rest of the season, the Trahans said they expect great things from the Cougars. “We want them to play with passion on the court, focus on the game, and give 100 percent. That’s evident,” Matt said. “They come to practice early and they leave late. The kids have a great attitude.”
