Old Colony graduates get advice from superintendent, peers

Jun 1, 2014

One hundred forty-one graduates got a sunny send-off at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School's 38th commencement on Sunday afternoon.

Students heard from Superintendent Gary Brown, who gave the class of 2014 several bite-sized words of advice.

"Keep learning until the day you die. Make books part of your life, even if they are e-books. When you post something online, post something valuable to others," said Brown. "Always remember you're unique like everyone else."

For Brown, the graduation was his last in the position. Brown is retiring after three decades at the school.

"I am finally going to graduate from this great institution," said Brown. "I will take pleasure in knowing that I gave it my best."

Senior Class President Makayla Moore, a culinary arts major, took the stage after Brown.

"This is our moment," said Moore.

She said the class hasn't always been the best behaved, but it has been the most caring.

Valedictorian Jordan Rossetti exhorted her fellow graduates to set goals for their futures, knowing that there would always be uncertain times.

And before the students tossed their hats, Moore had one more word for them.

"We are a strong group of individuals who don't take 'no' for an answer," she said. "I challenge you to surpass those goals you have set."
