Old Colony holds 2nd annual 'Frosty Runner Race'

Feb 16, 2013

Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School’s second annual "Frosty Runner Road Race" welcomed more than one hundred participants, despite the threat of snow that nearly derailed the event for the third time in a row.

Having been postponed twice already due to the weather, the 5K and 10-mile races were held on Saturday morning. With more snow on the forecast, race organizer Bethenny Sylvia said she was holding out hope the race could go on as planned.

Luckily, the snow held off until after all of the runners had crossed the finish line.

“I don’t know if it was pinky crossing that helped,” Sylvia joked.

While many turned out for the event, due to the weather, Sylvia said there were not as many participants as last year’s race.

“The turnout was not as good as we had hoped, but it’s still good,” Sylvia said.

Last year, the event raised more than $2,300, which was used to purchase new gear for the school’s cross country teams.

With this year’s proceeds, Sylvia said the organizers would purchase more training equipment for the Athletic Department.

As for the runners, the chilly temperatures and snow gave them a chance to test their endurance.

Sarah Whinnem of Mattapoisett said the winter run was a good way to stay in shape.

“It’s good to have a winter race to keep you going,” Whinnem said. “The course was great, just a couple of spots that were a little icy.”

Kaudina Shka of New Bedford ran with her husband and a co-worker. As for the course, she said, “It’s not that bad. Sometimes it can be a little tough, but it was good.”

Acushnet resident Angela Francois and New Bedford resident Deidre Busse kept together for the whole 5K course on Saturday. The pair have been participating in local races since last spring.

“This is our 23rd race,” Busse said. “We’re always looking for local races.”

However, Francois added, “No marathons yet. We’re new.”

After the race, participants and bystanders gathered inside of the school for lunch, which was provided by the event’s organizers.

While the Frosty Runner event included a 10-mile course for runners, most kept with the 5K due to the weather.

But, after finishing the race, Whinnem said, “I’ll definitely be back next year. I’ll do the 10-mile.”

In the 10-mile run, Jason Eddy of East Bridgewater came in first in the men's category with a time of 58:36. Eddy set a new record for the Frosty Runner race beating last year's first place winner, Scott Anderson of New Bedford, who won with a time of 1:01:09. The top three winners in the women's category were all Acushnet residents. Tarley Sumner came in first with 1:14:44, Tino Fidalgo took second with 1:14:45, and DeDe DesRoches came in third with 1:15:56.

In the 5K race, Nathan Brito of New Bedford took first in the men's category with a time of 18:44. Rochester resident Meg Hughes, age 10, finished first in the women's category with a time of 20:49.
