Old Colony students inducted into National Honors Society

ROCHESTER- The student body of Old Colony Regional held an induction ceremony for its newly admitted National Honors Society students on Friday, Sept. 21.  

The National Honor Society is an organization which promotes scholarship, leadership, and community service around the country and at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School. 

At the induction ceremony, 30 members were added to the group, including 24 junior and six senior students. The inductees join 32 returning members of the National Honors Society. 

The student officers, an elected group, were also celebrated on Friday. The students in those positions are President Makenzie Viera, Vice President Doug Johnston, Secretary Zachary Soucy, and Treasurer Abigail Galas.

Those students inducted on Friday are as follows: Seniors Jeremy Miller, Caitlin Frates, Lauren McGowan, Ryan Farias, Nicole Amarelo, and Sara Norton and juniors Anthony Ferreira, Blake Dennison, Colin Hammond, Desiree Levesque, Drew Weaver, Emma Rich, Haylie Fernandes, Isha Mir, Jenna Mitzan, Joshua Vinagre, Kaylin Swartz, Katherine Ashley, Liam Stuart, Michael Nault, Nicholas Iamele, Owen Reed, Ryan Picewick, Sarah Dawicki, Taylor Mello, Victoria Duong, Zachary McMahon, and Makenzie Botelho.

All students inducted into the NHS are required to complete at least 20 hours of community service and show dedication to the community as a whole. In addition, students will lend a hand at school football games and other local events. Wherever this group goes, they are committed to service.

The advisers of the Old Colony NHS, special education teacher Heather Gifford and math teacher Marcie Gamelin, spoke during the ceremony on Friday night.

Superintendent Aaron Polansky also spoke at the ceremony, giving a congratulatory speech for the inductees.

Polansky also discussed other happenings at the high school. He said that the school is planning to offer Advanced Placement courses next year and that the high school has received a larger number of eight grade applicants than previous years. He also discussed the LAUNCH Program, which will allow students to complete a full college-level program in business education leading to a certificate in small business and entrepreneurship while still in high school.
