Old Colony suffers tough loss

Oct 5, 2013

When it comes to football, the scoreboard doesn't always tell the whole story.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Upper Tech Rams crushed the Old Colony Regional Tech Cougars in a game that featured mistakes from the Cougars, including many turnovers.

The Rams improved to 2-2 overall following a 43-20 win at Oliveira Field in Rochester. The loss also put the Cougars at a 2-2 record.

“I think it was a frustrating loss. I don’t think the scoreboard indicated how good a team we are,” said Cougar Head Coach Bryce Guilbeault.

In the third quarter, the Cougars flashed defensive brilliance halting a march on the end zone from the Rams, and even blocked a field goal attempt.

For Guilbeault, the effort was too little, too late.

“We didn’t click as a unit,” Guilbeault said. “The thing about Upper Cape is they’re pretty fast and they scored right away. Turnovers also hurt us.”

The game's outcome wasn't in question after the second quarter, but the Cougars put forth a strong defensive effort in the third quarter.

The Cougars stopped the Rams before the goal line and managed to block a field goal attempt. However, Upper Cape Tech's Dylan Derby broke through the Cougars defense at the end of the third quarter for a touchdown, and improved the Rams to an untouchable 43 points.

With an eye towards next week, the Cougars stayed focused and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, with minutes to go.

The touchdown put the final score at 43-20. Guilbeault said speed and a lack of communication hurt the Cougars on Saturday, but the the team will shrug off the loss. The team is focused on defeating South Shore Vocational High School, in Hanover, next week.
