ROCHESTER — After 27 seasons of decisive leadership, five championships won and four coach of the year awards, Matthew Trahan retired from his position as Old Colony Athletic Director and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach.

“This team is an extension of my family. I have loved every minute I have spent with them over the last 4 years,” said Trahan. “They are an amazing group of young men and have made our entire school community proud.”

Trahan was an assistant coach at Old Colony from 1998 through 2011 before taking the helm of varsity in 2012. He finished his coaching career with a record of 193-87, just seven wins shy of 200 career wins.

The varsity coach pushed his team to succeed in his final season, ending with an impressive 21-3 record. The Cougars also qualified for both the Mayflower Athletic Conference championship and the State Vocation Small School Championships this season.

His final game with the varsity team took place on Tuesday, March 4 where Old Colony faced off against top-seeded Pioneer Valley in the Sweet 16 round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs and lost, 75-43.

“Coaching my last game in the Sweet 16 in a loss to Pioneer Valley was an emotional night,” said Trahan.

Trahan said he will now enjoy the game in a different view. His oldest son Jaxson is currently an Old Colony freshman golf player and his youngest son Hudson will be attending the high school in the fall with intentions of playing basketball and baseball.

“Retiring from coaching feels bittersweet, but I will carry with me a lifetime of cherished moments, thanks to the wonderful players and families I’ve had the pleasure to get to know,” said Trahan. “I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all the coaches I've worked alongside over the years. Our camaraderie and dedication have made this journey so rewarding.”
