Old Colony volleyball has effort ‘to be proud of’

ROCHESTER — The Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School volleyball team faced a formidable test on Friday, Sept. 20 as undefeated Cape Cod Regional Vocational Technical High School entered the Cougars’ den.

Old Colony showed they can compete with a tough opponent, finding themselves locked in a 14-14 tie in the middle of the first set.

The Cougars went on to lose 3 sets to none, but head coach Lauren McGowan said it was a game to be proud of.

“I liked that they put in the effort,” said McGowan. “Sometimes they get caught up on mistakes and get in their heads but they kept on pushing and worked hard. We came up short but it's still one we can be proud of.”

No matter the score, the team was energetic and stayed positive, celebrating points and cheering on teammates.

“We have been working on [staying positive] for a long time and I think they finally realized that when they get down on themselves it doesn't help them at all,” said McGowan. “They know the importance of playing as a team and coming together.”

The loss drops Old Colony to 0-5 on the season. McGowan said that the early stages of the season have been an adjustment as younger players get more confident.

One of the bright spots of the team has been senior Logan Crook, a captain of the team and the Cougars’ libero, a crucial role in volleyball.

“She leads this team, not only being captain but by leading by example for all of our younger players,” said McGowan of Crook. “We’re going to get as much out of her as we can. It will be sad to see her go.”

The Cougars will look to improve on their strong effort on Monday, Sept. 23 at home against South Shore Regional Vocational Technical High School.
