Old Rochester Youth Soccer season in full swing

Oct 19, 2019

ROCHESTER — The Old Rochester Youth Soccer league provides tri-town children from preschool to sixth grade with the opportunity to learn the skills of the game, and compete against other players their age.

On Saturday morning , Oct.19 players took to the soccer field on Dexter Lane in Rochester to square off against their peers in the competitive, yet laid back league.

“The games are competitive, but the structure is developmental and fun,” said coach Frank Noone.

Noone explained that the focus of the league is “just learning the game and developing friendships with other kids.”

While there are no playoffs, and coaches don’t keep an official score, Noone said that doesn’t stop players from keeping track of who scored more goals each game.

Each Saturday games start around 8 a.m. and continue to about noon, with the youngest teams playing against each other first, and the older kids taking the field later on.

Noone said that one of the advantages the Old Rochester Youth Soccer league has over others is that players can start at a very early age. He said that this season there are about 45 to 50 players in the Pre-K division, while kids that age may be stuck watching their older siblings from the sidelines in other youth leagues.

The other age groups are for players in first and second grade, then third and fourth grade, and fifth and sixth graders in the oldest division. In total, Noone said that the league has about 170 players.

In addition to Saturday games, players practice on Mondays, and work to further develop their soccer skills.  Noone said that there are three more weeks of the fall outdoor season, after which the league will move indoors to play Futsal, which is similar to soccer, except that it is played on a hard court with teams of five.
