ORR boys tennis gears up for state championship
This spring has been a “dream season" for the Old Rochester Regional boys tennis team, says Coach Russ Keeler. And it’s not over yet.
With an overall record of 18-1, undefeated in the conference (14-0) and the South Coast Conference championship title, they have barely lost a match all season. Now the team is looking for success at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association state championships.
Keeler’s team is young with first singles going to the talented freshmen Owen Sughrue. Alex Bilodeau, a sophomore is second singles followed by Sam Pasquill in third singles. Maxx Wolski and Josh Lerman as first doubles and Jahn Pothier and captain Stephen Burke as second doubles round out the starting seven.
Keeler attributes their success to a few factors.
“We have a group of young kids who have played together since they were in the fifth grade,” Keeler said. “Now they’re in high school and myself as a coach, our program as a whole, are benefiting from it.”
Said Sughrue, “To have all of us at such a similar level, it really helps us grow as a team and that makes us all better.”
Burke, as captain, also brings up the quality of the team.
"He's our on-court leader. He gets everybody in the right mindset," said Keeler.
Plus, his team doesn’t just like playing tennis. It’s hard to get them off the court.
“They love to play. I give them a day off and they’ll be playing tennis anyway,” said Keeler. “They like to compete.”
The team is driven, he said, and they haven’t been satisfied to just play schools in their division.
“Winning the conference was something we expected,” he said.
After playing Barnstable, a front-runner for the Division 1 state championship, the players were hungry to face other challenging teams next year.
“They care less about their record and more about good competition and being pushed to produce their best,” said their coach.
That means they're not resting too much in the downtime between their final regular season game, against Dartmouth on May 25, and the MIAA tournament.
The team has a few scrimmages set in the interim in addition to practices, and they'll be ready to compete next week.
“We’re trying to focus on doing as well as we can," said Sughrue.
