ORR to encourage students to 'Say Something'

As part of the goal to support emotional well being in students, Old Rochester Regional High School will be part of the nationwide Say Something program.

Part of the Sandy Hook Promise, an organization founded after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the campaign encourages students to speak up before an incident occurs.

ORR Principal Mike Devoll said Say Something is a weeklong campaign, but since it falls during homecoming, the school decided to take a different approach.

“We didn’t want to mix the message there,” said Devoll. “We’re going to launch a Say Something year with a different theme for each month.”

Whether it be drug abuse, bullying or some other concerning behavior, Devoll wants students to speak up.

“The day we signed up for this program was the day of the shooting at the community college in Oregon,” he said.

The night before, the shooter was online discussing his plans and no one said anything. Devoll wants students to feel comfortable about speaking with someone before it is too late.

“It can be as simple as ‘my friend is in an abusive relationship.’ Say something. Tell someone.”

Devoll said the decision to be part of Say Something also grew out of a recent visit by former Celtics player Chris Herren who spoke with the junior high and high school students about his drug addiction. Herren encouraged students to be OK being themselves rather than turning to drugs, self harm or other dangerous behavior.

The Say Something campaign will begin the Monday after homecoming.
