ORR officials outline five-year goals

School administrators asked the community where they want to see the Old Rochester Regional School District in five years, and more than 100 people responded.

On Wednesday, Elise Frangos, assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, told the Marion School Committee a list of goals have been identified following a series of strategic planning sessions.

The sessions were held on Sept. 19 and Sept. 21; the first profiled the district and its demographics, capital needs, student test scores, and more. On the second day, six focus group sessions were held. Officials from the New England School Development Council directed those sessions. Founded in 1946, the council is dedicated to developing high performance schools in the northeast.

“I think it has been a really wonderful, fruitful process and I want to thank the citizens and stakeholders who took part in the focus groups,” Frangos said. A cross section of the community participated, including parents, teenagers, and senior citizens.

After the sessions, administrators developed four goals based on community suggestions. Goals are based on improving, organization and infrastructure, technology, student/staff relationships, and social and emotional learning.

Frangos said the next step for school leaders will be to develop a plan by creating action items to reach those goals. Principals, teachers, and community members will be invited to the “mapping process,” according to Frangos.

School committee member Christine Winters noted this year differed from past years because residents had less time to give feedback.

She said the second-day sessions only allowed one hour of public comment at a time. Winters suggested reaching out to some participants to make sure their contributions are considered.

Frangos said administrators would keep that in mind, and added hectic schedules make it difficult to accommodate everybody.

“It’s always so hard to get people together with their busy lives,” Frangos said.
