ORR Principal puts forward youngsters' soccer club

Old Rochester Regional High School Principal Mike Devoll admitted that when he originally planned a youth soccer group, he might've had some stake in the design.

"I have two young kids, and I couldn't find a spring soccer league for them, especially in the spring," he admitted. Most soccer groups begin in the fall.

Devoll decided that he was going to change that. This May marks his third year offering a youth soccer league, for all children ages four to eight.

The league will run from May 6 to June 17. It will meet at ORR every Saturday morning, from 9 - 10 a.m. The intent, Devoll explained, is to offer the children an introduction to soccer. "It's meant to be fun and to get the kids out there and active."

While Devoll put the youth group together, he won't be the one coaching. Those responsibilities fall to his high school soccer players. Devoll is the boy's soccer team coach, and has recruited several students from the girl's side as well. The students are paid as part of a summer job, and get experience coaching and managing a team. The young players, for their part, have students to look up to.

Last year, according to Devoll, there were over 100 children on the field. "We can take as many as sign up," he said. "I always have high schoolers ready to step in."

Registrations remain open, and will until May 6. However, Devoll made sure to mention, he's still willing to accept registrations during the first week, if a child decides that they want to play later. To register, email coachmikedevoll@gmail.com
