ORR students check out professions at health fair
The students of Old Rochester Regional High School got a healthy treat last week.
On Thursday, May 29, Kim Corazzini, the school’s nurse, and Mary Cabral, a marine biology teacher, organized the school’s first health career fair for students interested in pursuing professions in that field.
“Today’s event was a great success,” said Cabral. “The students were very engaged in what the local professionals were explaining. Each were interested in their own field.”
The cafeteria, where the event was held, was bordered with tables.
On the tabletops, posters made by Cabral’s students explained each health profession up for discussion.
“I was hoping to learn more about my interest in being a nurse practitioner at the fair. The posters were very informative,” said Alexis Lincoln, a junior.
Various professions, from nutritionists to emergency room doctors, were advertised with specialists behind each table.
Andrew Sogolow of the Boston-based Partners Healthcare Human Resources was one professional offering information.
“I’m hoping I can help the students explore and answer any questions they have on health professions,” said Sogolow, “There are a wide range of opportunities. I want the students to learn more so they can know that.”
Sogolow offered information on various career paths for students.
Reflecting on the fair, Corazzini said, “I was very pleased. I was very impressed with the work the students did. I can see ways that the event can be expanded.”
She added, “I also would like to have more students have the opportunity to participate.”
Corazzini and Cabral hope to continue brainstorming on ways to improve the event and plan to host another career fair next year.
