ORR students rank highly in international DECA competition

When Old Rochester Regional High School students Teddy Carroll and Eddie Gonet made the DECA International Competition last year, it wound up being cancelled by covid.

This year, they were able to compete — and place — in the international business competition.

Gonet placed seventh overall in the world at the competition, and Carroll placed in the top 20.

“It’s a dream come true,” Gonet said. “Because the past two years it’s kind of what we’ve been working toward.”

DECA is an international organization which works to prepare college and high school students for entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, hospitality and management.

The business competition consisted of a 100 question business exam and 3 role-playing scenarios in which they were given a scenario and tasked to come up with a solution in 10 minutes.

Gonet said competitors weren’t really able to gauge their competition — especially over Zoom — so it was hard to tell how well they’d done until the competition was decided.

“There’s a bunch of good kids out there,” Gonet said. “You give it your best and that’s all you can ask.”
