ORR unrolls AmbassadOR Club

They won’t have diplomatic immunity or be able to cut in line at the airport, but the members of Old Rochester Regional’s new AmbassadOR Club will have an important job to do this year.

The new group, initiated by Principal Mike Devoll, will, in many ways, be the face of the school this coming year.

Devoll took a cue from The Friars Club, a service organization at his alma mater Providence College, that conducted campus tours, ushered student events and generally acted as ambassadors at the school.

With the AmbassadOR Club (the OR is capitalized for Old Rochester), Devoll hopes students will join him in showing off the school’s best qualities.

“I think of myself as a glorified cheerleader in many ways,” he said. “I think the students could really get behind promoting Old Rochester.”

Devoll introduced the idea to students last year and asked those who were interested to fill out an application and write a one-page essay on what they have done and would like to do to promote ORR.

Devoll said he wanted a variety of students who had school pride.

“I didn’t want it to be the National Honors Society where we were just choosing the best and the brightest,” he said. “I wanted representation of kids who cared about the school and wanted to help me promote it.”

A group of teachers reviewed the applications, which were anonymous, and chose 14 students per grade. Those students, who will be sophomores, juniors and seniors, have already met this summer to discuss a game plan for the year.

Senior Sara Lafrance said she was interested in the group because it could help boost morale at school.

“I think our school lacks a little bit on school spirit if it doesn’t have to do with sports,” she said.

Lafrance would like to see the AmbassadORs bring light to the achievements of academic groups.

"A lot of kids don’t even know that our school has a math team," she said. "If the math team wins a meet, then we would celebrate that."

First up, though, the AmbassadORs will welcome the freshmen class.

“They’re going to run freshmen orientation,” said Devoll. “Who better than the AmbassadORs to help freshmen navigate the first day of school.”

He said the students would also be the “welcome wagon” for new students throughout the year and for prospective students who want to shadow a peer.

As the year goes on the AmbassadORs will brainstorm and implement their ideas. Devoll hopes they will be a visible and positive presence on campus.
