With copious amounts of costumes, elaborate sets and about two dozen munchkins, the Old Rochester Regional Drama Club is getting ready to take audiences on a magical trip down the yellow brick road.

The club is holding nothing back with its production of the “The Wizard of Oz.”

Director Paul Sardinha said the play will be an “assault of color,” with a poppy field turning to a field of snow and a scene that moves from sepia to color, not unlike the Technicolor opening of the classic movie.

Sardinha said he and costume director Helen Blake visited another school’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” and “we laughed like idiots,” he joked. They turned to each other and knew they had to bring the play to ORR’s stage, but they also knew it would be a lot of work.

“It’s huge,” Sardinha said. “I always over produce a show.”

There are nine scene changes in the first act and 11 in the second, plus a cast of 140. And then are the “puppies,” Sardinha’s term for the kids on the set who play the cute and nasally Munchkins and who welcome Dorothy.

The musical numbers also promise to be a trip down memory lane, or rather “Over the Rainbow.” Led by an orchestra of music teachers, students and other local musicians, the play is full of familiar songs, from the opening number with Dorothy, played by senior Hannah Deane, to the “Lullaby League/Lolly Pop Guild” medley.

All are invited to take a trip to Oz. The production will be Thursday, March 31 through Saturday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 3 at 2 p.m.

In addition to Deane as Dorothy, the cast includes Evan Roznoy as Professor Marvel and The Wizard of Oz, Nick Claudio as the Tin Man, Kyle Costa as the Lion, Rikard Bodin as the Scarecrow, Sienna Wurl as Auntie Em, Drew Robert as Uncle Henry, Lexi Melloni as Glinda, Serena Iacovelli as the Wicked Witch and Sarah Lafrance as Toto. The ensemble includes Sara Achorn, Emily Faulkner, Colleen Garcia, Cammie Kidney and Celeste Hartley.

Costumes are by Helen Blake and music is by Michael Barnicle.

Tickets are $12 for students and seniors and $15 for general public, and are available at The Pen & Pendulum in Mattapoisett, The Marion General Store in Marion and Plumb Corner Market in Rochester. ORR is located on Route 6 in Mattapoisett. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
