Parade permit approved pending safety review
For Selectmen, safety will trump a parade permit request from a group focused on climate change.
At the board’s Aug. 20 meeting, Selectmen entertained a request from the Better Future Project that would bring 100 to 300 people to Marion streets. Ben Thompson, a project member, told the board parade participants would enter Marion from Mattapoisett on Route 6. Walkers would stay on sidewalks and planned to sleep in St. Gabriel’s Church overnight, Thompson said.
Selectmen approved the request pending review from the Fire Chief.
Selectman John Henry noted the church’s small size, and location in a dense neighborhood, required scrutiny from a public safety standpoint.
“We have a responsibility to ensure order and discipline in the crowd,” Henry said.
Communication is also key. When the group initially applied for the permit, Selectmen said it was difficult to reach parade organizers for more information.
“Communication in this whole thing is extremely important,” Selectman Stephen Cushing said. Thompson later exchanged contact information with Police Chief Lincoln Miller to keep him informed.
The parade will begin at the Brayton Point Power Station in Fall River and end at Barnstable Town Hall. The parade will support the Cape Wind project and is meant to raise awareness for clean energy, Thompson said.
