Parrot spotted in Rochester

Exotic tropic bird visits local feeders

Since early December, the Wrightingtons of Rochester and their neighbors have seen an unusual sight at their bird feeders – a brightly colored parrot.

The bird, which Jane Wrightington identified, appears to be an eastern rosella parrot.

“We were shocked to see this bird at our feeder,” said Wrightington in an email. “We have a lot of beautiful birds in our yard, but none that resembled this one. We knew that it wasn’t a normal bird for this area and didn’t think it could survive in the cold and the snow.”

The tropical creature has come to the Wrightingtons' feeder in rain, snow and well-below freezing temperatures. Where the bird came from is anyone's guess, but it seems to like life in the great outdoors.

“We tried to get it to come to us, but it would have no part of that,” Wrightington said. “He seems to be very content and happy surviving in the wild, the cold and joining in with all his other feathered friends at the feeder and the heated bird bath.”

The parrot has been around for two months now and has learned where the best dining places are at other feeders in the area.

“He has quite a buffet to choose from,” said the bird watcher.

Wrightington said everyone is enjoying the exotic feathered visitor. But this being the season of love, the beautiful bird is, unfortunately out of luck.

“If he/she is looking for a mate, we think he/she is definitely in the wrong climate.”
