The Mattapoisett Santa Run will be on Saturday, Dec. 7.  starting at the American Legion at 3 Depot Street. The holiday 5k was founded in 2011 by former Boston Marathon winner, and Olympian Geoffrey Smith. The race previously took place in New Bedford, with about 500 participants each year.

The Mattapoisett Board of Selectmen approved Smith’s request to move the race to his hometown in a meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 13. He said that the event is family-focused, and participants may walk or run in Santa suits during the event. The youth run will begin at 12:30 p.m and the Santa Run 5k will start at 1 p.m.

Parking will be available at the American Legion, Town Wharf, and Town Beach.
