Pets and prayer at Mattapoisett’s blessing of the pets

MATTAPOISETT — From Shih Tzus to Bernese Mountain dogs, the Mattapoisett Congregational Church welcomed animals of all sizes to be blessed during the annual blessing of the pets on Saturday, July 8.

According to Rev. Dr. Richard Wolf, the pet blessing is a reminder that “we are all God’s creatures.”

“[Animals] are beloved creatures of God,” said Wolf.

Although Wolf said he has blessed animals of all kinds including snakes and baby possums, most of his “customers” are dogs.

A Mini Bernedoodle named Neville was one of the many dogs who were blessed by Wolf.

Neville, who was named after Neville Longbottom from the “Harry Potter” movies, welcomed Wolf’s blessing with a wagging tail.

“May your blessing be upon this dog and in your great kindness, keep them safe from all harm,” said Wolf as he blessed Neville. “We pray that you would show forth your eternal love and mercy in the companionship and friendship this dog provides.”

After receiving their blessing, pets took a drink from the water bowl and enjoyed Milk Bone treats.
