Plans presented for reconstruction of Mattapoisett’s Pearl Street

MATTAPOISETT — Another Mattapoisett roadway project in the town village will soon go out to bid for construction.

Mattapoisett’s Pearl Street will be receiving upgrades from the intersection of County Road to the intersection of Church Street.

Ken Motta, a senior project manager for Field Engineering based in Mattapoisett, met with the Select Board on Tuesday, Oct. 1 to discuss the project.

Motta said he has been working closely with Highway Surveyor Garrett Bauer to come up with a project and wants the result “to make everyone happy.”

“We’re at a point now where bid plans are 100% done, subject to some minor tweaking here and there,” said Motta. “There will be a full-depth pavement reconstruction the entire length.”

Motta aims for the project to go out to bid to construction companies in April.

It is currently unclear when construction will start, but it looks to be about a three-month task, according to Motta.

Stretching from County Road to Hammond Street, there will be a 24-foot wide road with a sidewalk that complies with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

From Hammond Street down to Church Street, utility poles and grass strips with trees pose physical constraints, Motta said, keeping the width of the street at 22 feet which it was previously.

Motta added the changes will have minimal, if any, effect to property owners.

The project will also feature a “full replacement of the existing saltwater collection system,” said Motta.

“The biggest challenge on this roadway courier was fitting an ADA sidewalk on a side where we have trees,” Motta said. “I think everyone is well aware that the root zones of some of these trees have already undermined the sidewalk.”

He said it is “a little early in the game” to hold a discussion regarding the trees but has solicited an assessment of the trees from an arborist.
