Plumb Library December programs

Nov 30, 2012

The Plumb Library in Rochester has a number of programs and offerings in December.

Underwear Donations
The library wants underwear!  The Junior Friends of Plumb Library have set up a laundry basket, and are taking donations through the month of December.  Drop off your donations during library hours.  All sizes of children’s undies and socks are needed.  For more information about sizes, check the Gifts to Give website: http://www.giftstogive.org/wishlist.html.

Food for Fines
In the month of December, the library will be accepting nonperishable food items in lieu of fines.  If you donate a nonperishable item for Damien’s Pantry, pet food for the local shelters, or children’s underwear or socks for Gifts to Give, the library will waive your fines.  This does not include lost book and card fees, or copy and fax fees.  Donations will be accepted from December 1 to 27.  Damien’s Pantry especially needs items such as hot and cold cereals, peanut butter and jelly, baked beans, soups, canned fruit, rice, tuna, juices, canned pasta, dry pasta and sauce, and mac and cheese.

‘Just the Facts’

The nonfiction book discussion group will be reading “Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal,” by Conor Grennan.  In search of adventure, 29-year-old Conor traded his day job for a year-long trip around the world, starting with a three month stint volunteering at the Little Princes Orphanage in Nepal.  There he met children who were not really orphans.  Child traffickers promised their families that the children would be protected and educated.  Instead, they were destined for slavery.  Conor resolved to reunite the children with their parents.  The group will discuss this book on Thursday, December 20 at 6:30 p.m.  Copies are available at the desk.

Café Parlez’

Café Parlez’ selection for December is “The Tiger’s Wife,” by Tea Obrent.

In a Balkan country mending from years of conflict, Natalia, a young doctor, arrives at an orphanage on a mission of mercy.  Soon she starts to feel superstitions and secrets gathering everywhere around her, secrets her hosts and grandfather have chosen not to tell her.  Secrets involving the strange family digging for something in the surrounding vineyards.  The most extraordinary clue is one Natalia must find for herself.

In 2011, this book won the National Book Award.  The group will discuss it on Thursday, December 27, at 6:30 p.m.    Books are available at the desk, or bring your own copy.

National Card Playing Day
December 28 is National Card Playing Day.  Bring a friend, sibling, cousin, or grownup along with your favorite card game, and play it at the library between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.  Members of the Junior Friends will be on hand to play as well.

Hot chocolate will be served, in honor of National Chocolate Day, December 28 and 29.

Plumb Library Holiday Hours
