Plumb Library May book club reads
Cafe Parlez nonfiction book club
Plumb Library’s Café Parlez fiction book club will discuss “Mozart’s Sister” by Rita Charbonnier on May 28. Maria Anna Walburga Ignatia Mozart was called Nannerl by her family, especially her beloved little brother Wolfgang.
At the age of five, she could play the harpsichord and gave public performances. She and Wolfgang were inseparable, equal in talent. Yet it was Wolfgang who carried their father’s dreams of glory. As they matured, Nannerl was forced to give up her performing and become a piano teacher to support Wolfgang’s career. But a potential suitor awakened Nannerl’s passion for life and music.
The novel discussion will be Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. Books are available at the library front desk.
Just the Facts book club
The “Just the Facts” Nonfiction Book Discussion Group will be reading “Thank You for Your Service” by David Finkel for May. Finkel was previously embedded with the men of the 2-16 Infantry Battalion during the Iraqi surge. In this book, Finkel has once again embedded with some of the men of the 2-16, but this time at home after their deployments have ended.
He is with them in their most intimate, painful and hopeful moments as they try to recover, and he has created an essential portrait of what life after war is like, not just for the soldiers but for their families. This book looks at two questions: When we ask young men and women to go to war, what are we asking of them? And when they return, what are we thanking them for?
The book club will discuss this selection on Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. Copies are available at the desk.
