Program serves up Portuguese culture to ORR club

Club members sampled a variety of foods.
MATTAPOISETT — The Old Rochester Regional High School Cultural Club recently attended Cafe Mimo in New Bedford to enjoy Portuguese food and listen to a panel of Portuguese guest speakers share their experiences, traditions, and culture.
Steven Bernardo, a Portuguese teacher at the school, led the panel discussion and started with a local history of why the area has one of the largest Portuguese populations outside of Portugual.
Students learned about mainland Portugal, Azorean Portugal, and how Portuguese culture has been Americanized.
They tried kale soup, natas, chicken Mozambique, carne porco à Alentejana and a Portuguese soda called Sumol.
