MATTAPOISETT — As part of its artist series, the Mattapoisett Free Public Library will be presenting a quilt exhibit during May.
The exhibit, “April Showers Brought May Flowers” by Laurie Despres, will be available from May 1 to May 31.
In the exhibit is the “Puddles and Flowers” quilt designed and created by members of Active Day of New Bedford, a day program for adults with special needs. More than 20 members — only two of which had previously ever used a sewing machine — took turns sewing pieces of donated cotton fabric for the quilt. Active Day nurse Laurie Despres machine quilted the piece.
Also on display at the exhibit are quilts created by local quilters Bea Bettencourt and Lucille Peloquin.
On Saturday, May 25 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Despres will offer “Sewing with Everyone” in the Mattapoisett Library large meeting room. The one-session program is for anyone who wants to organize a group sewing project.
The class will offer tips, pointers and techniques that show how to help include and engage everyone in participating. Despres has been a quilter for more than 35 years and has assisted a wide variety of groups to create quilts together. The program is free and no registration is required.
