Rare goose takes up temporary residence in Rochester

Feb 28, 2020

ROCHESTER — A rare pink-footed goose has taken up residence in Rochester this week.

The goose was first sighted in the corn fields at Vaughn Hill Road and Route 105 in Rochester on Sunday, Feb. 23 with confirmed sightings through Friday, Feb. 28. The species breeds in Greenland, Iceland and Spitsbergen (between Norway and the North Pole).

Naskatucket Bird Club members Moe and Carol Molander viewed the bird Sunday afternoon on walk with members of South Shore Bird Club that happened to be planned for Sunday.

It’s common for individual pink footed geese to be spotted with flocks of other geese, but it rarely comes to North America in the winter. The rare goose was spotted with a blue form of a snow goose, two barnacle geese and 1,000 Canada geese.
