MARION — On Aug. 8 the Marion Natural History Museum hosted Amy Kukulya, a research engineer with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and one of the lead authorities on the SharkCam research vehicle.

Attendees heard about the science of tagging the great white shark and how the vehicle is able to follow the shark through the use of sonar "pings". Kukulya brought footage of the SharkCam being repeatedly attacked by a white shark.

SharkCam is an autonomous underwater vehicle, which is similar to the cameras used to study sea turtles, such as the leatherback. Kukulya also shared video footage from the back of a leatherback turtle while it traveled through the water, eating jellyfish.
