Residents urged to contact Washington in favor of flood insurance bill
Town Administrator Mike Gagne is urging residents to recommend US House Bill 3370 to the Senate and President.
The proposed legislation would prevent the extreme increases in the cost of flood insurance that followed previous changes in flood plain maps and in the way flood insurance is subsidized by the federal goverment.
The House passed the bill on March 4, and it is now being debated in the Senate. If passed, the bill will head to the Oval Office for the President’s signature.
Gagne said Mattapoisett’s website, www.mattapoisett.net, has information on the bill and other FEMA-related issues.
Selectmen also appointed a group of residents to look into issues with the FEMA maps and insurance. Gagne said the committee is researching the maps to see if any of them need to be reevaluated.
