Residents on watch for possibly rabid raccoon

Jan 24, 2014

Chapel Road residents are on the lookout for a raccoon, which may be infected with rabies.

After receiving reports of the animal acting strangely, Animal Control Officer Kathy Massey said she attempted to capture it on Friday, Jan. 24.

The caller reported the raccoon was walking in circles. When Massey approached it she said it ran down the middle of the road.

“He’s not feeling too good,” Massey said. “He’s got a bit of a headache.”

She went door to door to alert residents in the area.

The report is the second incident this month of a rabid raccoon in town. Another one was captured and euthanized after being seen near Prospect Road.

Two cats are being quarantined for 45 days because they were in the same area as the first raccoon. Even pets vaccinated for rabies must be quarantined following an encounter with a rabid animal, said Massey.

Anyone who sees an animal behaving strangely should call the Police Department at 508-758-4141. Do not approach or catch such an animal.
