Rochester Memorial School renovations almost complete

Rochester Memorial School's $26.5 million renovation is wrapping up in preparation for the school year.

The 120,000 square-foot school has undergone renovations for the past 18 months, including the addition of a new 33,000 square-foot wing made of precast concrete.

"We're very pleased with the quality of the construction," said Town Administrator Richard LaCamera. "Gilbane has done a very nice job."

"The pre-cast concrete structure was assembled in 18 days," said Michael Meunier, Facilities Manager for the school. "Sort of like Legos."

With August now in full swing and September rapidly approaching, the race is on to finish the job and bring 18 months of renovation to a close.

"We have a very short time to get this school open," said Michael Meunier, Facilities Manager for the school.

"This is an 18 month project," said LaCamera. "The project was presented to the town in the Fall of 2009 and the residents voted for an override for debt exclusion to pay for it."

While the state paid $11.9 million, the town picked up the rest of the tab and clearly got what it paid for.

"All new desks. All new tables. Ergonomic chairs," said Meunier, walking through the corridors, pointing out how rich in technology the new structure is. "Anything to do with technology is here."

The new technology includes plenty of Apple computers, interactive Eno whiteboards by PolyVision and a state-of-the-art music room with special acoustic panelling.

"This school has a great music program," said Meunier. "You'd think you were at the high school with the show these kids put on."

With their new school, the students can now practice in facilities befitting their musical prowess.

"This all about technology," said Meunier. "Not about building a palace."
