Rochester to receive $10,000 annually from SEMASS
On Monday night, Rochester Selectmen approved a host agreement with SEMASS that guarantees an annual charitable donation to the town.
Town Administrator Mike McCue said he and town counsel Blair Bailey worked with officials at the waste-to-energy facility for several months on the agreement.
The terms guarantee that Rochester will receive $10,000 from SEMASS each year.
McCue said SEMASS has historically been generous, having donated to support the Country Fair and various municipal projects in past years.
“My understanding is they’ve always been very good to the town,” McCue said.
However, those donations have fluctuated through the years.
With the agreement, McCue said SEMASS knows how much money to allocate for charitable contributions year to year.
“This codifies that so they know how much they need to budget for each year,” McCue said, adding that the company isn’t compelled to donate.
“[SEMASS is] being a good corporate citizen,” McCue said.
Previously, boards and committees would solicit SEMASS for funding.
Now, town groups will apply for those funds from Selectmen who will distribute the money as needed.
McCue also noted that SEMASS recently made a one-time $10,000 donation to help purchase the town’s new ladder truck, which cost $85,000.
“They went above and beyond,” McCue said. “We are extremely thankful.”
