Jim Feen somehow managed to blend technology, healthcare and a love of hockey into his job.

“Some people might think I’m crazy,” he says. “Yes, it’s challenging and stressful. But I love what I do every day.”

Feen recently became Director of Applications & Systems Development at Southcoast Hospitals Group, overseeing four core information technology applications teams that focus on business systems, physician initiatives, clinical systems and programming and interfaces.

In a nutshell: he’s leading the teams that develop and improve software and information systems across the company.

His start in healthcare was somewhat serendipity. With an RN mother and physician brother, Feen wound up a unit coordinator in a hospital early on. Though his background was in business management, he says that job sparked it all.

“That position really led me to the path of working in healthcare,” Feen says. “I grew up around computers—my family had an Apple IIc—and for a long time, I was looking for a way to marry that background of technology and healthcare.”

Prior to his promotion, Feen was MIS Clinical Systems Manager at Southcoast. Before that, he was Senior Supervisor at MEDITECH, in Norwood, where he managed implementing and supporting clinical software systems for 10 years.

He and his wife, Amy, live in Rochester with their three kids Jake, and twins Lindsey and Kara.

Feen also grew up playing hockey, and is on the Board of Directors for Cape Cod Canal Youth Hockey and is Commissioner of Cape Cod Canal youth In-House Development hockey program.

“In hockey, you’re only as good as your team,” he says. “That attitude blends into our projects at Southcoast too. We’re always improving how we define our work and manage it, and that can only be done with the solid groups we have at Southcoast.”
