Rochester Scouts hold gaming night
Rochester Boy Scout Troop 31 and the Marion and Rochester Girl Scouts traded sleeping bags for screens at the fourth annual TekNite.
Hosted by Troop 31, the Boy Scouts set up tables, computers and a projector in the Grange Hall and spent a night playing video games with their female counterparts.
The event was planned to go until 7 a.m. the next morning, and when Scout Master Mike Blanchard asked the Scouts if they planned on sleeping he was met with a resounding “NO!”
“This is the one night of the year I won’t tell them to put their phones away,” Blanchard said. “I also won’t tell them to go to bed.”
The Scouts brought their own computers and headsets from home, with some carting in three screens for optimal gaming experience.
“We play driving games, first-person shooting games, motorcycle games,” Blanchard said. “They really like it.”
Blanchard, a computer security engineer for Dell, custom built all the servers himself for the game night. He also used a 3D printer to create electronic badges for the scouts.
“It took a lot of work,” he said.
There was also a sound system set up and a host of other physical games for Scouts to play, such as a mini powdered doughnut challenge where scouts had to see how many powdered doughnuts they could eat without taking a drink. There was also a chewing gum sculpture contest where contestants got five large pieces of gum to chew and then had two minutes to create a sculpture with it.
